Updates to the FSMA 204 – Are you ready?
The FDA Traceability Rule FSMA 204 (Food Safety Modernization Act section 204) has been updated. The final implementation deadline is set for January 20, 2026. FSMA 204 adds traceability record-keeping requirements for businesses that manufacture, process, pack, or hold certain high-risk food products.
What is Stipulated in FSMA 204?
It stipulates the need for businesses to maintain and process data related to Critical Tracking events at stages within their supply chain where risks of a food safety incident could occur. For example, the stages from harvesting raw produce to consumer-ready products are for sale at a grocery store, a retailer, or online.
Businesses will be mandated to keep records containing Key Data Elements to track Critical Tracking Events. Impacted businesses will need systems to collect and share data at key points throughout their supply chain and store records for two years following the sale or distribution of food items. The required data must be made available to the FDA, in electronic format, within 24 hours of being requested. These requirements are for both human and animal food.
Compliance preparation
Preparing to comply with the FDA’s FSMA 204 new Food Traceability requirements involves a thorough assessment and enhancement of current traceability practices within the food supply chain. Business owners should review their existing traceability systems to determine if they can meet the FDA’s enhanced requirements for recordkeeping, traceability, and information-sharing.
Key questions to consider include:
- Do we have a comprehensive system to trace the movement of food products throughout our supply chain?
- Are our records sufficient to trace one step forward and one step back for all food products?
- How are we integrating technology to improve traceability and data accessibility?
- Have we identified critical control points where enhanced traceability measures are needed?
- Are we prepared to respond to FDA requests in 24 hours for traceability information during a foodborne illness outbreak or recall?
By addressing these questions and potentially collaborating with suppliers and distributors, businesses can ensure readiness for compliance with FSMA 204, thereby enhancing food safety and regulatory compliance measures effectively.
